MERCHANT & MILLS
14a, Tower Street, Rye, TN31 7AT
I've been a fan of Merchant & Mills since my Grandma gifted me some perfectly packaged haberdashery for Christmas last year. Since their move from Wales to Rye I have been wanting to take a trip and visit. Though it’s a little way out, perhaps an hour from London, an hour from Brighton I can assure you of one thing, no matter what direction your heading in from it is well worth the visit, this shop will not disappoint.
Carolyn Denham and Roderick Field make up Merchant & Mills, they formed the company in 2010 to ‘elevate sewing to it’s proper place in the creative world, respecting the craftsmanship it entails.’ Between the pair their skills of fashion and design are defined in their defiance to becoming the everyday average haberdasher. Both the shop and the product feels strong and true to the roots of sewing, the fabrics all raw and natural - no pretty pinks and ditzy quilting florals will be found here and needless to say the utilitarian approach to packaging is in a league of its own.
The online shop gives you everything you need patterns, scissors, fabric, haberdashery but the real bricks and mortar are a real treat and the advise given and the lessons learnt are enough to visit the shop alone.
